A day in pisa

What to see in Pisa in just one day? The tour that we propose naturally starts from the famous Campo dei Miracoli, where you can admire the Tower of Pisa, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Camposanto. From here we will then move, with a short walk, to Piazza dei Cavalieri, overlooked by the Palazzo dell'Orologio with the Torre della Fame and the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. After another 5 minute walk, you can then reach one of the most characteristic districts of the city: Borgo Stretto, where you can admire the other two leaning towers of Pisa, respectively annexed to the church of San Nicola and that of San Michele degli Scalzi.

Finally, to conclude the visit of the city in style, we will head towards the Lungarno Mediceo: here there are some beautiful buildings such as Palazzo de' Medici and Palazzo Toscanelli, but also the Church of San Matteo in Soarta. In the evening, therefore, you can stop in this area for an aperitif at sunset and a typical Tuscan dinner.

Campo dei Miracoli is undoubtedly the symbolic square of Pisa: the view that will open before your eyes is immense and the architectures that you can immediately admire as soon as you arrive in this square-garden are wonderful. The first thing that will attract your attention, of course, will be the Leaning Tower of Pisa: you can choose to climb the 294 steps to get to the top and enjoy the view from above. The cost of the ticket for the ascent on foot (the only alternative) is 18 euros, but you should book it well in advance because you risk not finding a place and having to wait a long time also because no more than 40 people can climb the tower at a time. Once you get off the tower, you certainly cannot remain indifferent to the view of the Cathedral of Pisa, a true masterpiece of Pisan Romanesque architecture: I advise you not to stop and admire the basilica only from the outside but to enter and enjoy the show that awaits you inside, also because admission is completely free.

Leaving the Cathedral, there are still some things to admire in Piazza dei Miracoli: the Baptistery of San Giovanni, for example, which is presented in all its splendor, contains a wonderful baptismal font and next to the altar the pulpit made by Nicola Pisano in 1260, not to be missed. The entrance to the baptistery of San Giovanni costs 5 euros and I advise you to take advantage of it because it is worth it.

To conclude the visit of Piazza dei Miracoli, I suggest you also take a trip to the Camposanto, which closes off the north side of the square. It is a huge monumental building that is worth a visit: you can buy a single ticket at a discounted rate valid for 2 monuments (therefore for the Camposanto and the Baptistery) at the price of 7 euros.

Piazza dei Cavalieri

In less than 10 minutes on foot, starting from Piazza dei Miracoli, you can reach Piazza dei Cavalieri, overlooked by the Palazzo dell'Orologio with the famous Torre della Fame, nicknamed so because of the legend of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, of whom Dante also speaks in the Divine Comedy. It is said that the count, condemned to starve together with his children and grandchildren, became a cannibal and devoured his offspring to survive. From this year it is possible to visit the museum center that was created inside the tower and discover all the fascinating history of Count Ugolino.

The Palazzo della Carovana and the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, which deserve a quick visit, also overlook Piazza dei Cavalieri.

Borgo Stretto and the Medicean riverside

From Piazza dei Cavalieri, with a very short 3-minute walk, you can reach a very characteristic district of Pisa, which hides the other 2 leaning towers: Borgo Stretto. Here you can admire the Church of San Nicola and the Church of San Michele degli Scalzi, with their respective leaning towers. From here, continuing towards Piazza Garibaldi, you will arrive on the Lungarno Mediceo: enjoy the view and take the opportunity to admire Palazzo De'Medici and Palazzo Toscanelli.

At this point you can relax and have an aperitif: at sunset the Lungarno is a marvel and there are several characteristic cafes. Take advantage of it for a typical dinner, thinking back to the beautiful day that has just passed.
